Dr Jacqueline Pereira-Sabga–a family physician working in one of the most emotionally and psychologically difficult areas of medicine, care of the terminally ill–has been awarded Woman of the Year by the InterClub of T&T.
The award took place last Sunday at the Hyatt in Port-of-Spain when the InterClub, an umbrella organisation for over 20 NGOs throughout T&T, held its 22nd annual event, An Afternoon Tea, proudly marking International Women’s Day celebrated on March 8.
According to the InterClub, Dr Pereira-Sabga’s (chair of Promise House) compassion and courage in this area are outstanding. “Her forthright call to provide humane palliative care to people in their last days is a call to our conscience, and in particular to those who hold the power to relieve the suffering of the terminally ill.
“At a relatively young age, she used her passion for extreme athleticism to raise funds in the hundreds of thousands for cancer charities for children. Her willingness to go beyond the call of duty and provide care for people in the most dire of circumstances without expectations of any palpable reward is evidence of her compassionate and generous nature.”
An auction of a painting at the event raised over $6,000. There were lots of giveaways and entertainment.
Zalayhar Hassanali, the wife of former president Noor Hassanali, Mrs Hazel Manning, wife of former prime minister Patrick Manning, Minister of Social Development Donna Cox, Ambassador of Trinidad and Tobago to Caricom Jennifer Marchand were among the scores of women in attendance.
