Nationals are being urged to seek that divine light within them that draws them closer to God.
The call was made by attorney Veera Bhajan when she delivered the feature address at Divali Nagar celebrations in Chaguanas on Friday. Bhajan said the purpose of life is not about the quest for material things but to connect with God.
Bhajan, who was born without arms but has excelled despite this, said, “It is said where our attention goes, our energy flows. Are we dancing to the beat of darkness or light? Are we giving our attention and energy to the darkness outside and within us, or to the spark of inner light and divinity?
“We cannot speak of the journey towards that light without recognising our own shadows. It’s just like the deya, our inner light shines brightest through our darkest moments. Our shadows are our divine teachers. It’s the part of ourselves that we often hide, run away from and resist. It is our fears, our self-doubt, our anger, greed, sadness, our lack of self-worth, self-love.”
Noting that she too is going through a journey, Bhajan said, “As I journey towards my own inner light, I was required to look deeply within myself and face my own struggles, my own darkness and accept the role I play in creating my own reality. May we never be discoursed by these moments of struggles as Shri Ram himself when he had moments of great light and solitude as he returned to Ayodha, he also had moments of great darkness and suffering. We cannot ask the darkness to leave, we must turn on the light. Our fears, doubt, pain and frustration are all an integral part of our existence. We must be able to touch our darkness, to look our darkness in the eye, sit with it, embrace it and own it.”
Bhajan said once people can understand the darkness within, they will find that divine light shining brightly and comforting them.
“That divine light is God himself seeking to manifest himself in and through us.”
She said people tend to get caught up with the illusions in their minds and forget that they really are spiritual beings.
Bhajan said her greatest challenge in life was not dealing with the fact that she was born without arms but her most painful challenge was freeing herself from the limitations of her mind.
“Of the cages and walls I built in my mind, of the thought pattern, conditionings and emotions. It became necessary for me to remove these blocks and barriers which were preventing me from experiencing my light and so can you,” Bhajan said.
She said the journey towards one’s inner light requires surrounding oneself with and trusting God.
The Coca Cola Teen Talent competition was also staged on the night and Victoria Amrita Maharaj was judged the Best Overall Winner and also took home the award for the Best Film Song item. Sapna Seepaul won the award for the best Indian Classical song.
