Residents of Carlsen Field in Chaguanas are calling on Government and the Environmental Management Authority (EMA) to act after a massive fire erupted at Eco Scrap Solutions Limited compound yesterday.
Fire officers said a nearby bushfire spread to the debris on the compound of the scrap metal yard. They said the fire was at the core of the mound and would take a lot of water to extinguish. According to the Fire Service, it may burn for some time before the blaze subsides.
Residents were concerned about the fumes being emitted. One resident told Guardian Media: “We don’t know what items are being stored there, and these fumes may be toxic. The Fire Service should have evacuated everyone near this facility. Carlsen Field is an agricultural area, and WASA uses the groundwater here. In the past few years, scrap metal dealers and other commercial activities have been setting up here. We want the Government and the Environmental Management Authority to move them out.”
Employees of Eco Solutions declined to speak with Guardian Media.
