There are no plans to remove vendors from the Chaguanas Market.
The assurance came from the Chaguanas Mayor Faaiq Mohammed.
The market is undergoing upgrade works and as a result, a doubles and a sweets vendor were allegedly moved to allow the construction of a booth.
Since then there has been speculation, with some vendors alleging there were plans to displace them.
However, Mohammed denied this saying that the upgrades were initiated by the Ministry of Rural Development and Local Government, in collaboration with the Rural Development Company.
“Accommodations are being carefully arranged to ensure that their interests are preserved and their advantages remain intact,” he said, giving an assurance to the vendors.
The upgrade works include the installation of two premium booths. The Mayor explained that one of the booths is situated in an area where no vendors previously operated, while the other required the relocation of two vendors.
He added that a collaborative meeting and site visit were conducted, during which all parties reached an agreement regarding the necessary adjustments.
“Furthermore, we are in the process of regulating all vendors to the front of the market,” Mohammed said.
The completed works will provide permanent spaces for all vendors, he added.
