Within a few hours on Monday, a total of 14 drivers were slapped with more than $60,000 in fines for various traffic offences commited over the weekend.
The drivers appeared before Magistrate Anslem Leander in the San Fernando Traffic Court.
The charges included driving under the influence, failing to provide a specimen of breath, dangerous driving, failing to produce driver's permit, driving without insurance and failing to wear a seatbelt.
Two drivers Stanley Jebodh and Ako Savary who pleaded guilty to a second offence of driving under the influence were each disqualified from driving for three years.
Jebodh was arrested around 12.10 am on Monday by PC Figaro after the police observed a grey Primera wagon swerving from left to right in a dangerous manner along the Southern Main Road, Marabella.
Court prosecutor Sgt Harold Ishmael said Figaro stopped the wagon and requested Jebodh's driving documents.
He said,"Boss, ah doh have meh permit, ah was going by meh grandmother and forget it in meh pants."
When asked if had been drinking, since his breath smelt of alcohol, Jebodh said, "Yes boss, ah was drinking and meh grandmother call so ah rush to go by she." Jebobh failed the breathalyser test with a reading of 80 microgrammes.
The prescribed limit is 35 microgrammes. He was fined $10,000 on the drunk driving charge, $400 for failing to produce his permit and $6,000 for dangerous driving.
Savary was arrested on Friday around 9.05 pm during a road traffic exercise.
Upon speaking to Savary, PC Hinds detected a strong alcohol odour on his breath. Savary admitted to consuming two drinks of gin and tonic water. He failed the breathalyser test with a reading of 59 microgrammes. He was also fined $10,000.
Stacy Bhim, 37, failed to produce a specimen of breath. She was stopped by PC Maynard around 8.05 pm on January 13 near the San Fernando Police Station.
While interviewing her, the officer detected a strong scent of alcohol on her breath and her speech slurred. She admitted to drinking three beers about three hours earlier. Bhim failed the sobriety test with a reading of 107 microgrammes. The other test was 94 microgrammes, but the third reading came back void.
She was fined $3,000. The drivers were given time to pay the money.
