A father of two who was shot Pinto Road, Arima, on Wednesday, succumbed to his injuries at hospital yesterday, becoming T&T’s 600th murder victim in the process.
Police said Ashram “Sona” Williams was a past president of the Stretch Togetherness Community Group (STCG), which caters to residents from Valencia to Sangre Grande.
He had reportedly been spending the Christmas season at his mother’s home at Hoyte Avenue, Pinto Road, Arima, before he was shot by an unknown assailant on Wednesday.
According to reports, around 3.05 pm, Williams was at home when someone called out to him from on the roadway. When he went outside, several gunshots were heard and he was later found bleeding at the gate.
Williams was rushed by police to the Arima Hospital by officers from the Arima Task Force, where he underwent surgery and was warded in critical condition. However, he succumbed to his injuries yesterday.
Police have no motive for the killing.
Yesterday, members of the Williams Trace, St Alban’s community admitted to being in both shock and anger at the killing.
Villagers called for a proper investigation and swift justice for Williams’ family.
A villager and member of STCG, who gave his name only as Enrique, said Williams was a great support to their community before, during and after his tenure in the organisation.
The villagers also extended their condolences to his immediate and extended family and asked that they be strong in this time of mourning.
Enrique said villagers will be holding a candlelight vigil today at 6.30 pm at the corner of St Alban’s Road and Eastern Main Road, Valencia, in memory of Williams.
Williams was the second person to be murdered in the community that day.
Just two hours earlier, Jason “Doggy” Blanc was shot dead off Hoyte Avenue.
Investigations into both killings are continuing.
