Chaguanas Mayor Faaiq Mohammed has assured the Muslim community in Felicity, Chaguanas, that roadworks at Greenidge Road will be completed before the start of Ramadan, the Islamic month of fasting, which is carded to begin on Tuesday.
Mohammed said the Chaguanas Borough Corporation is spending around $300,000 to do a box drain project to alleviate flooding in the area. One of the roads to the mosque in the community had to be blocked off for the project. However, Mohammed said there is an alternate roadway that can be used to access houses and the mosque.
“That area has a problem with flooding and we are looking to alleviate that,” Mohammed told Guardian Media.
However, Imam Rasheed Karim, head of the Felicity Muslim Association, said he is not satisfied with the project. Karim said the box drains will result in a narrower roadway. He said the residents were not consulted and he has no assurance that the work will, in fact, be finished in time for Ramadan.
Karim said he has made calls to ASJA, T&T largest Islamic organisation, the Minister of Local Government and the MP for the area to get involved.
