A Clayton County Police officer, with Trinidadian parentage, died on Monday morning following a car accident in the United States.
According to a report from 11alive.com, the accident occurred at about 9:40 am at the intersection of Tara Boulevard and North Main Street, Georgia.
"The officer, unfortunately, passed away from his injuries," the department said in a prepared statement.
Police said the driver in the other car was taken to a local hospital and is in serious condition. They've since identified the officer killed in the crash as Armondo Mendoza, 22.
A spokesperson for the department said Mendoza had been with the agency for just over a year.
She said before he was on the force, he came to the police department with his mother to cater an event and that is when he realized he wanted to be an officer. He later joined the team, she said.
The Georgia State Patrol is investigating the accident.
Mendoza's uncle, Marlon Taylor told the Guardian Media that Mendoza's mother, Bianca Selina Coker Mendoza was originally from St Ann's and migrated to the US several years ago.
Taylor added that Mendoza was the grandson of Trinidadian George Tambi Maximin, better known as Tambi Maximin, founder of Rebirth House.
