Former Caroni Central MP Dr Glenn Ramadharsingh is seeking nomination to contest that seat again for the UNC in the next general elections.
Ramadharsingh said he has been having meetings in the area with people supportive of his nomination.
He told Guardian Media, earlier this week, that his most recent meeting was in Chickland last week with speakers including Richard Thompson, Anil Balliram, Joseph John and Abdool Aleem. He said another meeting will take place next Thursday coming in Freeport.
Ramadharsingh said he is awaiting a final few signatures for the requisite 36 for the nomination form.
Ramadharsingh claimed he has the support of several councillors, previous constituents and UNC stalwarts.
The former minister of the People and Social Development in the People’s Partnership administration was fired in March 2014 after allegations were made against him by a flight attendant for inappropriate physical contact. After his dismissal, Ramadharsingh unsuccessfully contested the UNC’s Party Organiser post as an Independent candidate in the 2022 National Executive polls. He said he remained loyal to UNC political leader Kamla Persad-Bissessar.
“It’s one party, one leader,” he added, pledging his willingness to serve again.
Current UNC Caroni Central MP Arnold Ram is expected to submit a nomination for the seat as well.
The UNC’s nominations close April 11 with screening set to take place in May.
