Residents of Kernahan Trace, Cunupia are still without water, almost a week after they staged a protest to highlight supply problems in the community.
Last Friday the residents blocked part of Chin Chin Road and complained that they have not had a steady supply of water for the past seven years.
Curtis Kurton said the residents were told that the water supply would be restored by Tuesday.
“We can just hope and pray that the situation is resolved as quickly as possible,” he said.
Kurton added, “I wouldn’t say it’s victimisation. If I were to use a term at all, I would think it’s a bit of racketeering because, as we have stated, we are surrounded by people who are receiving a steady water supply, 24 hours a day, and we are not.”
Another resident, Jamelia Nelson, said they are forced to either buy water or call for truck-borne water.
“If we do get truck-borne water, we have to wait seven days to get more. And come on, if you’re getting truck-borne water, you’re only getting two tanks.”
“All we’re begging for is at least three days a week to get some pipe water, please. If we do get water, we have to be up at one in the morning, two in the morning, three in the morning, waiting for water,” she said.
The Water and Sewerage Authority (WASA) said the water shortage was caused by the harsh dry season and reduced water production at the Caroni Water Treatment Plant and promised that supply would be restored to the community.
