Hours after the Commissioner of Police Gary Griffith warned of a crackdown on drivers speeding home to avoid breaking the curfew a man was killed in an accident in Laventille.
Police said the accident occurred at 8.30 pm Monday when a white Nissan B15 crashed into an abandoned building on the Eastern Main Road, Laventille, near William Street.
Terrence Hyde, 32, the driver of the car, was found lying in a nearby drain. It was not clear if he was thrown out of the vehicle after it crashed or if he came out of the car on his own.
Hyde was taken to Port-of-Spain General Hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
Investigators said a 42-year-old man, who was also in the car, was taken to the hospital by a passer-by before the police arrived. He is said to be in serious condition.
Police said they suspected the driver was speeding along the main road when the crash occurred. At the TTPS press briefing on Monday, Commissioner Griffith said there were reports of drivers speeding an hour or two before the start of the 9 pm curfew. He promised greater police action in a bid to deter dangerous driving.
