Investigators are awaiting a statement from a Siparia labourer who nearly died after being beaten and thrown 16 feet down a well on Monday.
Romeo Mitchell, whose age police estimated around 55, remained warded at the San Fernando General Hospital.
South Western Division police said they were yet to get a statement from Mitchell as he was heavily sedated after suffering spinal injuries.
A report stated that around 10 am, Mitchell and the suspect got into a fight along the Mora Dam Road, Siparia. The suspect threw Mitchell into the well and left him for dead. The well is located at the Mora Dam, which is a reservoir used by PowerGen.
In 2010, WASA commissioned the Penal Well #25, on the Mora Dam Road to produce 120 gallons of water daily for the surrounding communities.
Unable to climb out because of spinal injuries and broken legs, Mitchell cried for help until residents heard and eventually found him in the well.
Siparia fire officers were contacted and they were able to rescue Mitchell. He was taken to the Siparia District Health Facility where he was treated and then transferred to the hospital.
Sgt Jaggernath, PC, Jimdar and PC Phillip visited the area and interviewed several people, which led to the arrest of the suspect, who remained in custody up to Monday.
