A 23-year-old Venezuelan national, who allegedly stabbed his 16-year-old ex-girlfriend, was remanded into custody yesterday after being charged with attempted murder.
Thomas Jose Ibarra Mejias of Claxton Bay appeared before High Court Master Shabiki Cazabon charged with attempting to murder the teen, who is also a Venezuelan migrant.
The teen was at Driller’s Sports Bar in Freeport on April 4 when she was allegedly stabbed repeatedly with broken glass bottles in the face.
She suffered severe injuries and was treated at the San Fernando General Hospital. She has since been discharged.
Mejias was also charged with assaulting Andreina Del Carmen Oyer Delgado. The woman was injured when she reportedly attempted to stop the teen girl from being stabbed, according to police.
Mejias pleaded guilty to the assault charge and was sentenced to four months hard labour.
The charges were laid by PC Boodoosingh.
The matter related to the attempted murder charge was adjourned to June 3.
