Police Constable Justin Redhead was granted $90,000 bail after he was charged with breach of a protection order, assault by beating and assault by threats. He appeared virtually before Magistrate Sarah De Silva at the Sangre Grande Magistrates’ Court and the matter was adjourned to May 4th, 2021.
PC Redhead, 39, is attached to the Traffic and Highway Patrol Branch, was arrested following investigations spearheaded by Supt Claire Guy-Alleyne, Inspector Stanley, and WP Corporal Edwards, of the Gender-Based Violence Unit (GBVU).
According to police reports, on August 12th, 2020, a woman obtained a protection order from the Family Court against the police officer, stating that he should not “verbally, emotionally, physically assault, or financially abuse the applicant.” He was also restrained from engaging in any acts of domestic violence towards the applicant.
On April 18th, 2021, at 12.10pm, the woman reported an alleged breach of the said protection order against PC Redhead to the Cumuto Police Station. The report was subsequently referred to the Gender-Based Violence Unit, Northern Division. The woman was taken to the Arima Health Facility, where she was medically examined and discharged. On April 19th, 2021, WPC Paponette conducted enquiries and recorded a statement from the woman.
Later that day, PC Redhead reportedly went to the Maloney Police Station where WPC Paponette identified herself to him in the presence of other officers. She told him of the report being investigated. He was informed of his rights and privileges and he made no requests. The investigator was given instructions to charge PC Redhead for the three offences formally.
