Two thieves, who were shot dead by police during an alleged shootout in Longdenville on Friday have been identified.
The names released by police were Atiba Goodridge of Point Fortin and Josiah Babb of Lastique Street, East Dry River, Port-of-Spain.
Police said both men were identified by relatives late on Friday.
The two were shot dead during a confrontation with police officers after they allegedly committed a series of robberies in the Longdenville area.
It was reported that the shooting occurred at about 10:30 am along Depot Road, near the Abel Brick Factory.
The officers were responding to a report of several armed robberies. The officers saw a vehicle matching the description and gave chase onto Depot Road, where the men stopped the car and attempted to flee into nearby bushes.
Police said the men opened fire on them forcing them to return fire. Both men, who were shot several times about their bodies, were taken to the Chaguanas District Hospital,however, they were both pronounced dead on arrival.
At the scene of the shooting, officers recovered and seized a Smith and Wesson revolver with three live rounds, along with three spent shells.
