The nephew of veteran calypsonian Black Stalin (Dr Leroy Calliste) is running for office in the upcoming Local Government Election on a UNC ticket.
Mickyle Calliste told supporters at the party’s Monday Night Forum last night in Marabella that he grew up on the Marabella trainline, one of the most economically depressed areas of the community.
Although he is just 19, Calliste said he has hopes of one day representing San Fernando as a member of Parliament.
Calliste said one of the main reasons Marabella’s youth turn to crime is because there is a disconnect between them and the system.
He vowed to work with the youths in the community to help them escape poverty.
Also addressing supporters was candidate for Pleasantville, Racheal Roberts.
She said a lack of representation in Pleasantville has left the Southern community crippled by crime. Roberts said although Pleasantville is currently represented by both a councillor and a Member of Parliament who both belong to the ruling People’s National Movement, they have been neglected for years.
