Several parts of the country awoke this morning to either no electricity or no pipe-borne water supply, or both, following the passage of Potential Tropical Cyclone #2, last night.
Both the water and electricity companies currently are working together to restore their respective services to these affected areas.
“The Trinidad and Tobago Electricity Commission (T&TEC) and the Water and Sewerage Authority (WASA) have mobilised to restore service to areas affected by last evening’s heavy rains caused by the passage of a tropical depression,” the Ministry of Public Utilities confirmed in a release.
In its final update last evening at 11 pm, T&TEC reported that service had been restored to 13 of 16 locations across Trinidad and Tobago, and crews had been dispatched to the remaining three.
“Some of the affected areas were: Old Road Blanchisseuse, Madras Road, and Biche in Trinidad, and Woodlands and Bacolet Estate in Tobago,” the Ministry reports.
In terms of WASA, the Ministry also confirmed that several of its Water Treatment Plants were forced to stop operations due to clogged intake screens caused by flooded rivers and water sources.
“This led to a disruption in the water supply to 19 areas across Trinidad and Tobago, including: Matura, Lopinot, Biche, parts of St. Ann’s and Santa Cruz in Trinidad, and Bacolet, Mason Hall and Roxborough in Tobago,” the Ministry said.
WASA had stated in a release earlier today that the affected Water Treatment Plants currently are being assessed and that operations will resume as soon as conditions allow.
