AKASH SAMAROO
Prisons Commissioner Dennis Pulchan is seeking to assure the public that everything is under control at the Maximum Security Prison in Arouca, following a protest by two inmates.
Commissioner Pulchan told Guardian Media that around 9 am, two prisoners set fire to their mattresses in the cell. He said these prisoners were protesting their recent transfer from the Port of Spain prison to Arouca's facility.
Commissioner Pulchan said the fire was quickly extinguished and the prisoners are again behind bars. He said at present, his officers are speaking with the inmates to ascertain why they are upset and how they can alleviate some of the stress that they have.
When asked if it was to protest the condition of the new cell the Commissioner said: "They'll get accustomed."
Commissioner Pulchan said he can assure everyone that everything will be okay for the rest of the day.
