A Venezuelan national who accepted a private hire work from a man he met while liming in a bar in Curepe, was later robbed of his car and valuables before being shot.
The 30-year-old who lives at Watts Street, Curepe was drinking with a 35-year-old male friend at the popular bar on Friday when they were approached by the suspect around 2.15 am on Saturday who asked to be taken to Lloyd Street, San Juan.
The trio left the bar in the victim’s silver Nissan Tiida and as they reached Sunshine Avenue, Bagatelle Extension—the suspect, who was seated in the backseat, announced a hold-up and brandished a firearm.
As the driver began fighting with the suspect, the friend exited the car and raised an alarm.
At the same time, the suspect shot the driver in the left buttock and forced him to exit the car.
As the driver collapsed on the road, the suspect sped off in the car.
As a result of the language barrier, responding officers were unable to understand the victim’s account and description of the suspect.
However, they took the injured man to the Eric Williams Medical Sciences Complex, Mt Hope where he was treated and warded in a stable condition.
The victim’s friend later went to the San Juan Police Station to report the matter.
He was accompanied by a friend who assisted with translating.

Teen robbed, shot celebrating mom’s birthday
A St Joseph teenager who was celebrating his mother’s birthday and left to purchase additional drinks as the lime continued into the wee hours yesterday morning, was later robbed and shot outside a bar.
The 18-year-old of Lluengo Village, Maracas, remained in a stable condition at the hospital up to yesterday.
The family was liming around 12.02 am yesterday when the teenager decided to re-stock the dwindling liquor supplies.
Accompanied by a friend, the two went to Rumors Bar which is located at the corner of San Pedro and Maracas Royal Road, where they purchased a quantity of alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages.
As they exited the bar, two armed suspects approached and began shooting at them.
As the driver fell to the ground, the suspects ran off.
The friend placed the bleeding man inside the vehicle and drove to the Eric Williams Medical Sciences Complex, Mt Hope, where the victim was treated for gunshot wounds to the lower left side of his back, two to the right upper arm, and three to the lower right side of his chest.
The teenage victim was said to be in a stable condition yesterday.
Investigations are continuing.
Cops probe shooting at Malabar football field
Investigations are continuing into a shooting at a football field in Malabar on Saturday.
A female resident of Kroton Avenue informed police she was standing in front of her home around 1.09 pm when a silver Tiida drove by following which she heard several loud explosions and saw the occupants of the car firing in the direction of a football field.
At the time, there was a group of people gathered on the field.
No one was injured during the incident.
Acting on information, officers went to Phase Four, Malabar and found the car used in the incident, abandoned in one of the driveways of a newly constructed home which was unoccupied.
Ammunition was found in the car.
Further checks revealed the chassis and engine number had been removed from the abandoned car.
