Kenrick Mohammed and Anthony Bailey were the top shooters of the opening day of competition of the Tobago Rifle Club Nationals at the John Dial Range, on Saturday.Mohammed beat the field in the Production category with 368.95 points while Bailey was the best in Standard division with 388.04 points.
Competing over five stages the competitors shot at their targets in different positions and locations. In stage One, the shooters had to shoot with left, right and both hands each time from a different locations all from the same distance from the target. At Stage two the competitors shot standing, kneeling and prone (lying) each time getting closer to the targets.
At Stage Three, the participants were required to shoot from acute angles, from close and long ranges. In Stage Four, the challenge was to shoot over, under and through barriers. In the Fifth and final stage, the objective was to fire from different seated positions.
At each stage the points were awarded for hitting designated areas on the targets and the time taken to compete each stage. Points were deducted as shooters were penalised for missing targets or stepping out of the shooting areas.
Mohammed showed he had the best combination of accuracy and speed to beat out of field of 26 pistol men in the Production Division with Aneel Ramjit taking second (335.84) and Christopher John (308.97) third. Tarike Phillips (302.67), Jason Mills (293.14), Randal Luces (288.41) and Donovan Mohammed (285.35) rounded off the top eight.
In the Standard class, Bailey showed his class taking the top honours ahead of Mohammed (348.02) and Gerard Persad (339.85). Marlon Moses (334.28), Peter Frederick (298.90), Kelvin Sabastien (276.25), Brian Armstrong (267.10) and Ramadin Ramnarine (252.32) all finished in the top eight in a field of 28 competitors.
Action concludes on Sunday, the second and final day, with competitors shooting from stationary position (standing, kneeling and prone). The prize giving ceremony is set for the Barcode Bar in Scarborough later.
