Reigning champion Clarke Road United was surprised at home in Wilson Road, Penal, by a determined Preysal Sports as the already relegated Central outfit scored a three-wicket win on Day One of the T&T Cricket Board Premier Division 50-Over competition Saturday.
Clarke Road got a top score of 63 from Red Force opener Vikash Mohan after they opted to bat first. He hit seven fours in the run-a-ball knock that also included one six.
Anderson Mahase got a start (41) and Clevon ‘Baby’ Kalawan, more known for his bowling, scored 42 (with four sixes) batting at seven.
They started steadily until they lost Shatrughan Rambaran (15) with the score on 35 in the fifth over and then lost Mohan at 129 for 2 in the 24th over. With the good start, Clarke Road could have been anticipating a score in the region of 300, especially with Mark Deyal and Yannick Ottley still to come.
But Deyal made just 24 from 32 and Ottley, who has good returns with both bat and ball for the Combined Campuses and Colleges in the ongoing Cricket West Indies Regional First Class Championship, made only three from 13 balls.
Former Guyana wicketkeeper Anthony Bramble scored 13.
Preysal can thank Justyn Gangoo for his epic bowling performance as his effort of 10 overs, two maiden 3 for 18 put a stranglehold on the champion's batting.
Aneal Rooplal helped out as he claimed 3 for 60 as Clarke Road were bowled out for 244 in the 48th over.
In reply, Darrius Batoosingh (23) and Antonio Gomez (43) put on 64 for the opening partnership
With 245 as the target, there was no need for the batters to bat in a hurry as the batters carefully negotiated the tricks of bowlers Ahkeel Mollon (1-43) and Deyal (2-54).
Justin Jagessar made 48 from 63 and skipper Adrian Cooper used 37 balls for his 32.
Only Te-Shawn Castro (68 from 58) and Nathaniel McDavid (27 from 25) were better than a run-a-ball as the visiting Preysal team reached the winning target of 245 for 7 from 48.1 overs to upset the champions at Wilson Road.
In Marchin, Charlieville, T&T Red Force players Terrance Hinds and Imran Khan combined to push Central Sports to a huge win over Bess Motors Marchin Patriots on Day One of the T&T Premier Division One 50 overs competition.
Like Clarke Road, the recently crowned League champion opted to bat first. Red Force and West Indies opener belted the bowling to all parts so that the dismissals of Kamil Pooran (8) and Keagan Simmons (6) were not a huge setback as the wickets fell on 43 for 1 and 51 for 2.
Ottley watched from the non-striker's end as Marchin Patriots, led by Derone Davis’ 3 for 28 continued to pick up wickets.
But at 114 for 6, he found an able partner in his Red Force teammate, Terrance Hinds and together they took the score to 229 for 7.
When the dust cleared, Central Sports were 290 for 8 at the end of their 50 overs with Hinds on 101 not out, while Ottley made 90.
In reply, Marchin suffered a double blow as they lost Castro and hard-hitting opener Evin Lewis for double ducks and at 15 for 2 was in trouble. Crystian Thurton’s 53 did little to help as Vishual Singh (1) and Kirstan Kallicharan (12) did not create the impact they needed as they folded for 173 in 29.3 overs. Imran Khan was too good for the Patriots as he took 6 for 29 from his ten overs.
