Local young squash players will get an opportunity to enhance their skills at the Powerade Junior Squash Programme which will be hosted at Raw Fitness Health Club at the Gasparillo Mall on Saturday.
The first developmental squash programme to be held in South Trinidad for several years will be organised by T&T’s top international squash player Colin Ramasra.
"It is absolutely necessary to run this programme now as the number of juniors from South Trinidad has declined sharply over the past ten years," said the programme organiser.
In the 1980s, 1990s and early 2000’s squash was vibrant in south and the majority of the national junior team came from south Trinidad. Many players emerged from junior programmes at Presentation College and Pointe-a-Pierre Club. As these programmes have faded in the last few years the impact has become clear.
"I would like to Thank Powerade and Raw Fitness for believing in the vision and making this program possible," said Ramasra.
The programme will run every Saturday from 10 am to 12 noon for the duration of the school term until April 4. The programme will cater for juniors from age six to 16.
Raw Fitness will host the junior programme on their ASB International Squash Court, the only one of its kind in the Caribbean. The programme is open to the public and all necessary equipment is being provided complimentary with registration. The coaching will be conducted by four internationally certified coaches with tremendous coaching and playing experience. Most notably former multiple women's national champion Rhea Khan and former national Over-40 champion Peter Pirtheesingh.
Ramasra said, "It is critical to create equal opportunities for the younger generation in all sports. Even the non-mainstream sports such as squash offer tremendous opportunities for the future. Squash is a core sport at most Ivy League Universities and has been rated as the healthiest sport in the world by Forbes Magazine.”
