Cadell Lyons improved T&T's gold medal tally to three after two days of competition at the Bolivirianas Pool at the Central American and Caribbean Confederations Aquatics (CCCAN) Championship in Barquisimeto, Venezuela, on Tuesday night. One night after he had to settle for the silver medal behind compatriot, Christian Homer in the 15-17 Boys' 50 metres backstroke final, Lyons turned the tables on his national team-mate with a gold medal swim in the 50 metres butterfly.
Lyons's winning time was 24.98 seconds, closely followed by Homer in 25.33 and Allan Gutierrez of Honduras who clocked 25.89 for third spot. Lyons' swim in the final bettered both the national age-group record of 25.18 and the open record of 25.03 which were both held by Joshua Mc Leod and was also just off the CCCAN record of 24.97 seconds. T&T also won three other silver medals and three bronze medals to carry it two day overall medal haul to 15 (three gold, seven silver, and five bronze) for fourth spot on the 20-country table.
The other silver medallists for T&T were Dylan Carter, Joel Sankar and Joshua Mc Leod while Kimberlee John-Williams, Jarryd Gregoire and Kimba Collymore got bronze. John-Williams who won gold on the opening night for T&T was a bronze medallist in the 13-14 Girls' 200 metres backstroke with a time of two minutes, 30.31 seconds. Andrea Garrido of Venezuela won gold in 2:28.81, while Barbadian, Lee-Ann Rose took silver in 2:29.18. Once again, Venezuela dominated the action at the pool with 16 gold medals, nine silver and three bronze medals on the night to take its two-day tally to 54 medals (27 gold, 18 silver and nine bronze).
Third is Guatemala (four gold, two silver, six bronze) followed by T&T, Barbados (three gold, four silver, two bronze) and Mexico (three gold, two silver, nine bronze). Overall, host team Venezuela leads with 571 points, well ahead of second placed T&T with 196 points, and third placed Mexico with 148. Guatemala is next with 135 points followed by Barbados with 98 and Cuba, 93.
