Serrette: Maingot's passing a great loss

The fu­ner­al ser­vice for for­mer na­tion­al shot put cham­pi­on Hu­bert Main­got was held yes­ter­day at Guy's Fu­ner­al Home on the South­ern Main Road in Cou­va at 2 pm. The 1983 Pan Amer­i­can Games bronze medal­list, died at age 56 af­ter suf­fer­ing a stroke at the San Fer­nan­do Gen­er­al Hos­pi­tal last Fri­day.

Na­tion­al Am­a­teur Ath­let­ics As­so­ci­a­tion pres­i­dent, Ephraim Ser­rette said Main­got's death was a great loss to track and field.

"Hu­bert's con­tri­bu­tion is one which would be sore­ly missed. He al­ways want­ed to do good for the sport and peo­ple like him are hard to come by," said Ser­rette. He added: "Hu­bert was al­so a very fun per­son to be around. Apart from his con­tri­bu­tion his per­son­al­i­ty is some­thing we will al­so miss."

Apart from his bronze at the 1983 Pan Amer­i­can Games in Venezuela, Main­got al­so won bronze at the CAC Games in Puer­to Ri­co in 1989 and Venezuela in 1977.
