T&T's Flyweight champion Rai Ramnarine yesterday put in her final touches at the Fine Line Gym, Chaguanas, for her contest against Paulina Cardona of Colombia set for Saturday, at the Central Regional Indoor Sport Arena, Saith Park, Chaguanas from 8 pm. Ramnarine, who had a three-week stint at the Canino's Boxing Gym in Fort Lauderdale, Miami, USA, said she feels well prepared for the fight."I have never been this prepared for a fight in my career. I have had three persons working with me and that along with my three weeks in Miami has given me all the confidence necessary," said Ramnarine.
Ramnarine, who unfortunately has not been able to get her hands on a video of Cardona in action, said she was expecting some fireworks in this clash. "I have never seen her fight, but I know she has a good record. This will be a good bout since she will be coming after me, and it will be a test of my skills. However, I am well prepared for whatever she brings on Saturday," she said. A win for Ramnarine who has her eyes set on claiming the World Boxing Association (WBA) and World Boxing Council (WBC) titles, will put her in line for the WBA Title against Etsuko Tada in March 2010.
Cardona on the other hand, an orthodox boxer who stands at 5' 3", will no doubt be looking to improve on her record of 14 wins (six ko's), six defeats and four draws. Ramnarine won a controversial split decision over Ana Fernandes of Venezuela on July 30 this year to claim the WBA Interim and the WBC Cabofe titles. A rematch was set for Boxing Day, however Fernandes pulled out and Cardona was called in as replacement. The card was then eventually rescheduled from December 26, 2009 to January 2, 2010 with Promoter Boxu Potts citing financial problems as the man reason for the change in date. The card will also see WBC Cabofe Light Heavyweight and WBE Cruiserweight titles holder Shawn Corbin take on Alejandro Roca Cardaso of Brazil for the Fedelatin title. There will be three other supporting bouts, in addition to wrestling and kickboxing matches.
