A fight is developing outside the ring weeks before Ria Ramnarine steps into it to tackle Japanese Etsuko Tada for the the WBA, WBC Cabofe and WIBA world titles at Jean Pierre Complex in Mucurapo. Ramnarine's co-manager and co-trainer, Boxu Potts revealed yesterday that the Japanese team of Tada has instructed the WBA to select all judges and referees for the fight on April 24. "I am objecting to the WBA selecting the referee and judges for this fight," Potts said yesterday. "The WBA cannot control the fight," he said. "They must learn to be circumspect when they are coming into people's country and understand they are coming under the auspicies of the local Boxing Board of Control. They can recommend, not control."
Potts believes that if the Japanese could influence the WBA on what to do, then they could influence the outcome of the fight. "If this happens, the WBA would have a manopoly on the fight and they would be controlled by the Japanese. So, the T&T Boxing Board must select one official from each sanctioning company (WBA, WCA and WIBA) and one of their own so as to ensure fairplay. "Whilst both teams reserve the right to oppose the judges and referees, in cases like these the final decision is always left with the Boxing Board of Control.
"We are hoping the Board would do the honourable thing and select neutral judges and referee." Meanwhile, top American female trainer Bonnie Cannino will be in Ramnarine's corner alongside local trainers Barath Ramoutar and Ulric Johnson and Potts. Cannino, a former world champion, has trained many top female fighters, including Ada Valez, a two-time world champion in the super bantamweight division. She will be coming in three days before the fight along with Ramnarine, who is presently in Maimi completing her preparations under the watchful eyes of the American. Ramnarine also called for support in the biggest fight of her career. "Believe in me, trust me, be there for me and I will make you proud."
