Four Independent Senators have been re-appointed to act by President George Maxwell Richards. The appointments of the nine Independent Senators took effect from Monday according to a statement issued by the Office of the Prime Minister, through the Government Information Service Division.
The appointments were made in accordance with Section 40 (2) (c) of the Constitution.Of the nine, five new senators replaced Prof Ramesh Deosaran, Annette Nicholson-Alfred, Gail Merhair, Dana Seetahal SC and Michael Annisette. The nine Independent senators are: Professor Harold Ramkissoon, Dr Victor Wheeler, Elton Prescott SC, Dr James Armstrong, Dr Rolph Balgobin, Basharat Ali, Subhas Ramkhelawan, Corrine Averille Baptiste-Mc Knight and Helen Drayton.

Dr Rolph Balgobin previously served as a temporary independent senator in the eight and ninth Parliament.
He is a corporate turnaround specialist with global experience in industry, entrepreneurship and academia.
Balgobin holds a Doctor of Business Administration from Manchester Business School, University of Manchester, an MBA from the Arthur Lok Jack Graduate School of Business and a BSc (honours) in industrial management from the University of the West Indies (UWI).
n Professor Harold Ramkissoon holds a BSc in mathematics from the UWI, a MSc in mathematics from the University of Toronto and a Ph. in Applied Mathematics from the University of Calgary.
He is the recipient of an Alexander von Humbolt Fellowship (Germany), a Fulbright Fellowship and a Third World Academy of Sciences Fellowship (China).
Ramkissoon is also the recipient of the Chaconia Gold Medal.
n Elton Prescott SC a trial lawyer with 30 years experience received widespread recognition as chairman of the Prescott Commission when he was appointed by the President to consider the application of the death penalty.
He was a director the Central Bank of T&T and was appointed chairman of the Standing Tripartite Committee on labour matters.
Prescott has also served on the Police Complaints Authority.
