Four In­de­pen­dent Sen­a­tors have been re-ap­point­ed to act by Pres­i­dent George Maxwell Richards. The ap­point­ments of the nine In­de­pen­dent Sen­a­tors took ef­fect from Mon­day ac­cord­ing to a state­ment is­sued by the Of­fice of the Prime Min­is­ter, through the Gov­ern­ment In­for­ma­tion Ser­vice Di­vi­sion.

The ap­point­ments were made in ac­cor­dance with Sec­tion 40 (2) (c) of the Con­sti­tu­tion.Of the nine, five new sen­a­tors re­placed Prof Ramesh De­osaran, An­nette Nichol­son-Al­fred, Gail Mer­hair, Dana See­ta­hal SC and Michael An­nisette. The nine In­de­pen­dent sen­a­tors are: Pro­fes­sor Harold Ramkissoon, Dr Vic­tor Wheel­er, El­ton Prescott SC, Dr James Arm­strong, Dr Rolph Bal­go­b­in, Basharat Ali, Sub­has Ramkhelawan, Cor­rine Aver­ille Bap­tiste-Mc Knight and He­len Dray­ton.

Dr Rolph Bal­go­b­in pre­vi­ous­ly served as a tem­po­rary in­de­pen­dent sen­a­tor in the eight and ninth Par­lia­ment.

He is a cor­po­rate turn­around spe­cial­ist with glob­al ex­pe­ri­ence in in­dus­try, en­tre­pre­neur­ship and acad­e­mia.

Bal­go­b­in holds a Doc­tor of Busi­ness Ad­min­is­tra­tion from Man­ches­ter Busi­ness School, Uni­ver­si­ty of Man­ches­ter, an MBA from the Arthur Lok Jack Grad­u­ate School of Busi­ness and a BSc (ho­n­ours) in in­dus­tri­al man­age­ment from the Uni­ver­si­ty of the West In­dies (UWI).

n Pro­fes­sor Harold Ramkissoon holds a BSc in math­e­mat­ics from the UWI, a MSc in math­e­mat­ics from the Uni­ver­si­ty of Toron­to and a Ph. in Ap­plied Math­e­mat­ics from the Uni­ver­si­ty of Cal­gary.

He is the re­cip­i­ent of an Alexan­der von Hum­bolt Fel­low­ship (Ger­many), a Ful­bright Fel­low­ship and a Third World Acad­e­my of Sci­ences Fel­low­ship (Chi­na).

Ramkissoon is al­so the re­cip­i­ent of the Cha­co­nia Gold Medal.

n El­ton Prescott SC a tri­al lawyer with 30 years ex­pe­ri­ence re­ceived wide­spread recog­ni­tion as chair­man of the Prescott Com­mis­sion when he was ap­point­ed by the Pres­i­dent to con­sid­er the ap­pli­ca­tion of the death penal­ty.

He was a di­rec­tor the Cen­tral Bank of T&T and was ap­point­ed chair­man of the Stand­ing Tri­par­tite Com­mit­tee on labour mat­ters.

Prescott has al­so served on the Po­lice Com­plaints Au­thor­i­ty.
