CAC Games boxing silver medalist Andrew Fermin is looking forward to improving his performance at the Commonwealth Games later this year in New Delhi. Fermin and his boxing colleagues, Tariq Abdul-Haq and Aaron Prince, who both won bronze medals were among the second contingent of T&T representatives who returned home from the Games yesterday. Fermin who was beaten by Jeysson Monroy of Colombia for the gold medal in the light heavyweight class said he was proud of winning his second silver medal after he finished just short at the 2006 edition of the Games in Cartegena, Colombia.
He competed in the middle weight class at those Games. Fermin said injury to his left arm may have cost him the finals against his Colombian opponent. The 25-year-old intends to use the different styles he saw in Puerto to help him prepare for the India Games. "I have seen a lot of different styles. Styles wins fight. I have also seen where the chinks in my armour are and I just intent to improve. There will be boxers from Europe and Africa so I need to be a stronger fighter." Prince who collected a bronze in the welter weight division said though he is happy with his medal he wanted the gold.
"I am feeling good but I am not totally satisfied because I wanted the gold. This is my second time at the Games. I had a better performance this time. I competed in a different?weight category and I was more comfortable. I did the best to prepare? with what I had. We had to train in Trinidad and didn't have any foreign outings before the tournament." Abdul-Haq whose medal was in the super heavyweight class explained he felt he could have gotten in more fights before leaving for Puerto Rico but felt the CAC Games is stepping stone for greater things for him in the future. He too is due to compete at the Commonwealth Games and believes that he can do well in New Delhi.(CC)
