Unattached cyclists, Marcus Carvalho stole the spotlight on the opening day of the National Cycling Championships Road Events when he pedalled to victory in the 40km Individual Time Trial yesterday. The riders began at the half-way stage of the Milk Road, Wallerfield before venturing onto the Eastern Main Road, then to Demerara Road before turning back at the Churchill Roosevelt Highway for three laps.Carvalho completed the course in 54 minutes, just ahead two-time national champion, Colin Wilson of Team Trek and Hummingbird's Sheldon Ramjit.
Among the juniors, national Junior Pan American cyclists, 19-year-old Varun Maharaj of Madonna Wheelers won his Two-Lap ride ahead of 15-year-old Sonic's pedallists' Rudy Ashton and Parkside's Christian Fairley to begin defence of his crown. Today, the action shifts to the King George V Park, St Clair for the criterium from 2pm while the third and final leg comes off next Sunday (September 5) with a Road Race starting at La Romaine at 7am.
