Kelvin Modeste netted a late goal to secure FC South End a 2-1 victory over Police in the battle for the second qualifier spot in this year's First Citizens Cup at the Marvin Lee Stadium, Macoya, on Friday night. The match was between the teams ranked tenth and 11th on the Digicel Pro League standings at the end of the first round of the league. Both teams were on a lengthy rest since the end of the Lucozade Sport Goal Shield playoffs and qualifying round matches in early July.
However, South End showed little signs of rustiness and went ahead in the 17th minute thanks to Kenrick Ettienne. But five minutes later, Noel Williams, who returned to the Police squad from cash strapped San Juan Jabloteh last month got his team level. The match looked headed for penalty-kicks until ten minutes from the end when Modeste re-directed a shot on goal past Police goalkeeper Emmanuel Nurse to put his team ahead for good.
It was the second win for South End over Police in a knockout playoff after earning a penalty-kicks playoff shoot-out win in the recently concluded 2010 Lucozade Sport Goal Shield. With the win, South End now joins title-holder, Defence Force, bmobile Joe Public, W Connection, DirecTV North East Stars, San Juan Jabloteh, Ma Pau, St Ann's Rangers and Caledonia AIA in the main draw knockout which takes place on September 15 with matches taking place three days later.
