Two die after van overturns

A Guyanese na­tion­al and his co-work­er were killed when the van they were in struck an­oth­er van and flipped sev­er­al times along the high­way near Chase Vil­lage Fly­over on Sat­ur­day night.

Ra­jen­dra Per­sad, 34, a Guyanese em­ployed with Vic­to­ria Med­ical Lab­o­ra­to­ries in San Fer­nan­do died on the way to the hos­pi­tal while his front seat pas­sen­ger, Daniel Alexan­der, of Mar­aval died on the scene.

The dri­ver of the oth­er ve­hi­cle, a 49-year-old con­trac­tor of Gas­par­il­lo was ar­rest­ed and charged af­ter he failed a breathal­yser test.

Po­lice re­ports stat­ed around 11.45 pm Per­sad was head­ing along the north bound lane of the Solomon Ho­choy High­way in a white Nis­san Fron­tier when he came in con­tact with the right rear of the con­trac­tor's Black Toy­ota Hilux.

Per­sad lost con­trol of his ve­hi­cle which flipped sev­er­al times and end­ed up in the me­di­an of the high­way in a south­ern­ly di­rec­tion.

Per­sad and his pas­sen­ger were trapped in the ve­hi­cle. Fire Ser­vice of­fi­cers had to use the jaws of life to free them.

Alexan­der, how­ev­er, died while Per­sad was tak­en to the Ch­agua­nas Emer­gency De­part­ment where he was trans­ferred to Mt Hope Hos­pi­tal. Per­sad died be­fore he reached the hos­pi­tal.

Vis­it­ing the scene were High­way Pa­trol and Freeport Po­lice Sta­tion of­fi­cers in­clud­ing Sgt John, PC Chapdeosingh, Cpl Nel­son and PC Bas­deo.
