Highlighting the continuous sporting success of Tobagonians, the Tobago House of Assembly (THA) held its awards ceremony themed 'Excellence: A Journey, Not A Destination' at the Atrium of the Gulf City Mall, Lowlands on Sunday.
Many from the sporting community gathered at the ceremony to honour 19 sporting categories including the Sporting Community of the Year and the Physically Challenged Athlete of the Year awards which were both proudly sponsored by the Digicel Foundation.
On hand to make the presentation and show her heartfelt gratitude was Digicel's Country manager for Tobago, Hazel Douglas, who commented, "The Digicel Foundation is always pleased to be associated with sport on the island and to reward and recognise outstanding performances in the community."
The event admired the island's sportsmen and women who contribute to the nation's sporting success with their outstanding performances in their various arenas. Akeem Stewart who broke a world record in Mexico last year when he won the gold medal in the men's shot put, was presented with the ParaAthlete award.
The Sporting Community award went to the Roxborough Police Youth Club–a young, vibrant club on the island, whose aim is to instill discipline in young people and to develop positive and healthy lifestyles while aiming to reduce crime and anti-social behaviour in the community.
The club has collected the Prime Minister's Award for Best Community Service, the Trinidad Express Youth Award and the THA's Best Youth Organisation, as well as the BPTT Youth in Education award.
