"Instead of a sign saying 'Do Not Disturb' I need one that says, 'Already disturbed, proceed with caution'." I saw this on my cousin Desiree Bernard-Mobley's Facebook timeline and it provided sustained laughter.I was preparing to write about some ten top things we should know about a person with mental illness (PMI) when it occurred to me that sometimes others who are well or undiagnosed need help in relating with a friend or relative who's managing a mental illness.
Reflecting on my life and the breaches others have suffered at the will of my mouth, I think it prudent today to retreat and try to wear the others' shoes, offering also, a communal apology (and certain I'd have to repeat this in the future). Many people may identify with moments when their mouth "had a mind of its own." Others may be able to deliberate on talking out of turn while inebriated, and yet others may just be what the youths today consider as being out-of-timing.
