Nine days after a 30-year-old Chaguanas man brutally gunned down his ex-girlfriend Deshon Sobers and her cousin Trevon, he was caught yesterday while on the run from police. In a massive manhunt, the suspect, who was first seen near his Enterprise, home was eventually arrested around 9 am at Queen Street, Arima. When Chaguanas CID led by Sgt Jitindra Toolaram learned of the man's whereabouts, they quickly began combing the Crown Trace area.
However, he managed to elude them by lying in the back seat of a car, which passed through a few back roads to get to the Churchill-Roosevelt Highway. The officers gave chase and alerted Arima Police that the suspect was headed to a friend's home in the East.Arima CID led by Sgt Harewood responded and the man was cornered despite efforts to outrun the officers. It was alleged that during the chase, he threw the murder weapon at the side of the highway. Police, however, did not find the gun.
He was arrested and taken to the Chaguanas Police Station where he is expected to undergo several identification parades before being charged for two counts of murder, two counts of attempted murder, and firearm related offences.
Police reported that on October 23 the suspect went to Sober's Francois Street, Enterprise, home around 1 pm, demanding to speak to her. When her grandmother, Veronica, told him to leave her alone, he barged into the house and shot Trevon, who tried to stop him. He then ran to the bedroom where he shot Sobers several times. Sobers' grandfather, Glenford, 73, an amputee and another cousin, Jamal, were also shot.
Sobers died within minutes, while Trevon died on the way to the Eric Williams Medical Sciences Complex. Glenford and Jamal are still recovering from their injuries. On October 24 a man claiming to be the suspect called Crime Watch host Ian Alleyne during the show and said he had no regrets over the incident. He said he drank Puncheon rum before carrying out the killings. Although he admitted to being so abusive that Sobers had a restraining order against him, he said it was she who still returned to him.
