In front of a near capacity crowd at Beausejour cricket ground, West Indies women advertised their quality, as they defeated South Africa by six wickets to take their T20 international series 2-0, following their eight-wicket win on Saturday.
Scores: South Africa 94/6 (20) vs West Indies 97/4 (17.2).
After their spinners restricted the South Africans to an inadequate 94 for six, the West Indies women strolled to victory.
Even the loss of Juliana Nero without a run on the board and the quick demise of Kyshona Knight with the score just 18, did not deter them from dominating in front of their cheering fans.
Opener Natasha McLean batted with great poised and was always in control, as she added 55 runs for the third wicket with the elegant Shemaine Campbelle.
Using a nice high backlift, Campbelle drove with authority and her association with McLean took the game away from South Africa and although she fell just before the victory for 33, there was no doubt in the result. Campbelle's 33 came off 28 balls with one six and one four.
McLean also went with just six runs needed, falling to the impressive Marizanne Kapp for 23 off 40 balls with one four. The win came with Deandra Dottin unbeaten on 10 and Shanel Daly, nine.
Kapp had the excellent figures of 4-2-3-3.
Earlier, the West Indies spinners proved a handful for the South Africans after they were inserted by the West Indies captain Merissa Aguilliera. Left arm spinner Shanel Daley the daughter of former Jamaican player Aaron Daley was in great form. She sent back the dangerous Shandre Fritz for five and that set the trend for the innings. Eight runs later Daley was up to her tricks again sending back Savanna Cordes for a 12-ball duck. She also delivered the coup de gras by having top-scorer and skipper Mignon duPreez caught and bowled for 26 to earn the 'Man of the Match' award. duPreez faced 41 balls and struck three fours.
While Daley was took wickets, Anisa Mohammed created all kinds of problems although she was wicketless. She conceeded only 13 runs from her four overs.
Towards the end of the innings Trisha Chetty 22 (31 balls) and Dane van Niekerk 19 not out (19 balls) gave the visitors a little boost.
The Windies women left St. Lucia at 4 am this morning and headed for Barbados where they will spend the day and leave tonight for India to take part in the ICC World Cup (VM)
