Devika Samaroo would have been celebrating her 26th birthday today but instead her family is planning her funeral.Police said the young woman of Inverness Road, Princes Town, died when the car in which she was travelling, crashed into a lightpole at Chaguanas early yesterday.The accident left Samaroo's family in a state of shock because it was the first time Samaroo ever stayed out so late at night.
Her father Gangapersad Samaroo said the young girl was studious and career oriented. "She don't drink, smoke or lime. It was the first time she ever went out at nights because she said she wanted to celebrate her birthday," he said. He added that Samaroo attended the Modern School of Business and was awaiting a job.
"She sent out applications all over and she was working as a store clerk at Carlton Centre for the time," Gangapersad said. He said his family was planning a special dinner for Samaroo's birthday. "Now we have to see about her funeral. Her mother (Sita Samaroo) taking this really bad and her brother Andrew is not speaking since he heard the news," Gangapersad said.
Police said Samaroo was returning home with a male friend after liming at a nightclub around 1 am yesterday. While proceeding on the south-bound carriageway of the highway, the car slammed into a lightpole on the left side. Samaroo died on the spot.Her body was viewed by a District Medical Officer and then removed to the San Fernando Mortuary. Investigations are continuing.
