Goal shooters Gursher Grant and Patrice Goring were the toast of their teammates as Police ended the 2013 Courts All Sectors Netball League on a high, by claiming the Premier Division Steve Sarjeant Challenge and Championship Division Jean Pierre Challenge knockout crowns at the Eastern Regional Indoor Sports Arena, Tacarigua, in the space of three days.
On Thursday night, Grant converted 29 of 36 attempts as the 'Law-women' brushed aside last year's winner Fire Service 46-37 in a virtual final, for a third straight win in the Steve Sarjeant Challenge and earn a maximum six points and the title.
National player and goal attack Joelisa Cooper chipped in with 17 valuable goals for Police from 24 attempts as they held off a late rally from Fire Service, after being ahead 11-8, 30-14 and 39-27 at the end of the first three quarters.
Prior to the Police and Fire Service encounter, Defence Force got its first win of the tournament when league champions University of T&T (UTT) defaulted.
Despite the loss, its second in three matches, UTT still ended second on the table due to a better goal difference than Defence Force and Fire Service with all three teams on two points each.
Two days earlier at the same venue, Goring almost single-handedly carried Police to the Jean Pierre Challenge knockout title when she scored 28 of her 36 attempts in their narrow 30-29 triumph over divisional league champions Bermudez.
Police, which led 15-13 at the half-time interval, also got two important goals from Donneisha Wickham while Kathy James, with 17 from 22, and Indra Anderson, with 12 from 18, were the scorers for Bermudez.
In the semifinal round, Police powered past Defence Force 33-25 with Goring scoring 28 goals, while Bermudez stopped Jabloteh 24-20 inspired by James' 13 goals from 16 attempts.
Today, the league will host its closing ceremony and awards function from 3 pm at Tacarigua.
