Meet Phoolmati Rosalyn Persad-Celestine, the woman behind Prophet Benjamin's 2013 popular Chutney/Soca offering Lokani. The exposure and fame this hit brought to the composer, also known as "Tanty Rose," has propelled her to not only record her music and offer it to others but to take to the stage herself.A housewife who operates a market on New Village, Point Fortin, where she sells produce from her garden, Persad-Celestine said that while she has been composing and writing chutney/soca songs for decades, this is the first time she has written for someone else.
Persad-Celestine said she inherited the gift of singing and composing from her mother, who performed often at traditional Hindu weddings. A tradition she has continued."She composed on the spot," said Persad-Celestine, adding she is seriously considering entering the Chutney/Soca Monarch competition next year.Describing her market hut as, "my office, where I am always writing songs," Persad-Celestine said it is here she met Prophet Benjamin, who expressed a desire to cross over into the chutney/soca realm and encouraged her to "write something" for him.
She did. And Benjamin said he enhanced it with a few verses of his own while adding a bit of Reggae flavour. The end result: a very successful 2013 Carnival season, eighth place in the chutney/soca competition and an opportunity for Persad-Celestine as the "Lokani" during his performance at Skinner Park, San Fernando.Speaking about her future plans, Persad-Celestine said the Lokani popularity has encouraged her to release a new chutney/soca single, Mother I Love You and I Apologise, just in time for Mother's Day.She said the song spoke to children who had wronged their mothers but might not know how to say sorry.
"Such children can give their mother the CD and say 'Happy Mother's Day.' Hopefully, when she listens to the song, it can help bring them back together."Her intention is to one day establish a home for the socially displaced, as well as battered women and children.
