Fatima College made their long journey to Penal count yesterday, as they shocked Naparima by five wickets in the second round of the PowerGen Secondary Schools Intercol T20 competition.
Opening batsman Kelly Rosales led from the front with an unbeaten half-century.
Fatima, which finished eighth in the Premier Division League competition, were underdogs going into this second-round match against Naparima, which finished fourth in the league.
Bowling first at the Wilson Road Recreation Ground, Fatima fast medium bowler Jonathan Hurst snatched 2/12 to reduce Naps to 103-7. Donavon Clayton and captain Daniel Brown both ended with figures of 1/13.
National batsman Nicholas Pooran top-scored with 31, while Chris Mohammed contributed 20.
In response, right-handed Rosales batted through the entire Fatima innings, making 52 off only 40 balls to lead them to the surprising victory with three balls to spare. Rosales was supported by Camillio Carimbocas, who made 16.
Jordan Sankaran's 2/16 was not enough for Naparima.
Fatima will now move on to the quarterfinals tomorrow to face El Dorado East.
In a Championship Division matchup, Vishnu Boys defeated Barataria South by four wickets to set a date with Princes Town West, tomorrow. Princes Town will be well rested, as they defeated Union Claxton Bay by default, yesterday.
Vishnu bowled first and reduced Barataria to 89-9 in their 20 overs. National U-19 captain Vikash Mohan led from the front with 4/13, while medium pace bowler Timothy Jugmohan took 2/15. Akimton Walker top-scored with 38 for Barataria.
In their run chase, Bryan Boodram struck 22 and Jesse Fletcher pitched in with an unbeaten 15 to take Vishnu home with two overs to spare. Marlon Phillips (2/16) and Kevin John (2/21) grabbed two wickets apiece for Barataria South.
