Two-time winner DirecTV W Connection will be chasing another piece of history when it faces North East Stars in the final of the Digicel Pro Bowl competition, the final match of the 2012/2013 Digicel T&T Pro League season at the Hasely Crawford Stadium, Mucurapo, from 8 pm tonight.Currently, the Stuart Charles-Fevrier-coached W Connection are level with former Pro League clubs San Juan Jabloteh (2005 and 2006) and Joe Public (2009 and 2011) as two-time winner of the tournament and with a win tonight, will be the most successful club in the competition. The club was also runner-up on three previous occasions–in 2005, 2006 and 2011.
On the other hand, Stars, led by former national captain Angus Eve, a winner at Jabloteh first as a player and then assistant coach to Englishman Terry Fenwick, will be appearing in its first Pro Bowl championship match and will be keen to add its name to list of winners, which stands at five, with Neal & Massy Caledonia AIA (2008) and Defence Force, last year, the other winners.
Last week, in the semifinal at the Marvin Lee Stadium, Macoya, both W Connection and Stars were made to work hard for their passage into the final by Defence Force and league debutants Central FC respectively, winning 43 and 53 respectively after 11 draws at the end of regulation time. But while W Connection was able to stay calm during its battle with the "Teteron Boys," Stars' Marcus Gomez was not so fortunate as he was issued a red card by referee Rodphin Harris and will watch tonight's contest from the stands.
So far this season, Stars and W Connection have met four times with the Sangre Grande-based Stars enjoying the edge in league play with 20 wins in the second and third round after a 00 draw in round one. However, W Connection will be in a more confident mood having won its last meeting 43 on penalty-kicks after a 00 draw to lift the Lucozade Sports Goal Shield title, which no doubt left a bitter taste in its rival's mouth. And with tonight's match, which brings a close to the 2012/2013 season, both clubs are expected to give it their all to end on a high. Speaking following his team's team final training session yesterday, Eve was quick to point out as a player or coach it was always a good feeling to make it into the final of a competition and this one was special being the first time the club had made it to this point.
He added, "The guys are all focused on the task at hand because we know it's not going to be an easy match against W Connection."We will be without the services of Marcus Gomez for this match, but striker Cornell Glen returned from injury for the semifinal match and he is ready to go for the final."Commenting on his first season in charge of the club, Eve, a former assistant coach at Ma Pau as well, said he believed he had done a good job."We have reached the finals of three tournament, winning one (Toyota Classic), reached the semifinal of the TTFF FA competition and placed fifth in the league, so I think we can pat ourselves on the back for a good season. And winning the Pro Bowl will be the icing on the cake," he ended.
Charles-Fevrier, who was reluctant to give a prediction of the outcome, said he believed the team that made the least mistakes would come out on top.""It's a final and the result can go either way. Both teams have been playing well for the last couple of months and we both ended the Pro League with the same number of points, and us ahead of goal difference so we are evenly matched," said the St Lucian-born coach. The winner's cheque is expected to be close to $110,000 as the initial figure of $100,000 will be increased by a percentage of the gate receipts of the competition. There are also individual awards for the Top Scorer, Most Valuable Player and Most Outstanding Coach of $2,000, $2,000 and $3,000, respectively.
