Point Fortin mayor Clyde Paul is appealing for the establishment of a faculty of engineering in the Borough. The mayor asked Science, Technology and Tertiary Education Minister, Fazal Karim, to consider the suggestion. He has even suggested that the Government look at the existing site of the Point Fortin Area Hospital to construct the faculty when the hospital is relocated. Paul moved a motion at the council's statutory meeting last Thursday. The motion was unanimously passed. In the motion, Paul noted that the council considered that an instrumental part of its mandate, was a role in human development and the enhancement of education in the Borough.
He said the Borough of Point Fortin was the industrial hub of the South West peninsula and the lifeblood of support for the large majority of its Burgess. "In consideration of the heavy industrial climate and a national policy of further expansion and diversification of industries planned for the future and where as, trained and qualified personnel to execute this policy will be a primary requirement, be it resolved that the Minister of Science, pursue diligently all the necessary steps to establish a Faculty of Engineering , resident in the Borough of Point Fortin," the motion read. Paul also called on National Security Minister John Sandy for an modern fire fighting facility in the Borough. The mayor said Point Fortin had outgrown the needs of the current fire station, which serviced the surrounding communities from La Brea to Erin to Icacos.
