CARA­CAS, Venezuela-Venezuela's state oil com­pa­ny says an ex­plo­sion at a ma­jor oil re­fin­ery killed one work­er and in­jured three oth­ers. Petroleos de Venezuela SA says the ex­plo­sion, which caused a fire, af­fect­ed one unit of the Petroce­de­no fa­cil­i­ty.

The com­pa­ny says in a state­ment that yes­ter­day's ex­plo­sion was brought un­der con­trol and re­fin­ing op­er­a­tions re­sumed short­ly af­ter­ward. Na­tion­al Guard Gen­er­al Ale­jan­dro Keleris said res­i­dents liv­ing near the re­fin­ery were evac­u­at­ed as part of pre­cau­tion­ary ef­forts. Au­thor­i­ties are in­ves­ti­gat­ing the cause of the ex­plo­sion.
