Rising young chess player Dev Soondarsingh scored a notable upset when he defeated Sean Perryman in the second round of the Knights' Open Chess Tournament on Thursday. Soondarsingh, a finalist in this year's race for the national championship, outplayed last year's De Verteuil Memorial Open champion with a brand of chess that showed his improving skill.
In the first round, Soondarsingh won over Hector Gallemaso. He joins seven other players on two points each, national champion FM Ryan Harper, NM Marcus Joseph, FM Frank Yee, Esan Wiltshire, Joshua Johnson and Hayden Lee. Another notable upset was the victory of Kena Bartholomew over NM Ravishen Singh. A total of 40 players are contesting the Knights Open, one of the popular annual tournaments. The event continues today at RHAND Credit Union building, Abercromby Street.
