Ris­ing young chess play­er Dev Soon­dars­ingh scored a no­table up­set when he de­feat­ed Sean Per­ry­man in the sec­ond round of the Knights' Open Chess Tour­na­ment on Thurs­day. Soon­dars­ingh, a fi­nal­ist in this year's race for the na­tion­al cham­pi­onship, out­played last year's De Ver­teuil Memo­r­i­al Open cham­pi­on with a brand of chess that showed his im­prov­ing skill.

In the first round, Soon­dars­ingh won over Hec­tor Galle­ma­so. He joins sev­en oth­er play­ers on two points each, na­tion­al cham­pi­on FM Ryan Harp­er, NM Mar­cus Joseph, FM Frank Yee, Esan Wilt­shire, Joshua John­son and Hay­den Lee. An­oth­er no­table up­set was the vic­to­ry of Ke­na Bartholomew over NM Rav­ishen Singh. A to­tal of 40 play­ers are con­test­ing the Knights Open, one of the pop­u­lar an­nu­al tour­na­ments.
