The Environmental Management Authority (EMA) says it has given a commitment to work with the Diamond Vale Residents Committee to control noise pollution caused by fetes held in the community. A statement from the EMA said the authority's managing director/CEO Dr Joth Singh met with committee members on the issue of unwanted noise and other nuisance factors in the residential Diamond Vale. It said he commended the committee for taking action with such a well-organised approach. He was presented with a petition of over 200 signatures. The residents, the release said, were satisfied that they were able to hand-deliver the petition to Singh.
The residents said they were being affected by noise and associated problems associated with large fetes, especially around Carnival time. The statement quoted Singh as saying that while he listened to residents' plight, he reminded the group that: "The EMA gives permission for events to happen under controlled circumstances regarding sound levels. "The EMA would grant a Noise Variation but with conditions, for example facing speakers away from receptors. All other nuisance factors can be addressed by the Police Service." Singh also commended the committee for delivering a copy of their petition to the Commissioner of Police.
