Almost four months after former national beauty queen Candice Worrell was assaulted at her Chaguanas office, a 47-year-old suspect has been held by police. According to reports, the suspect, of central Trinidad, was arrested around 8 am while walking along the Chaguanas Main Road, Chaguanas. The suspect was said to be in hiding in Guyana but recently returned to the country. He was held through an anonymous tip-off by a member of the public. Worrell, an office manager with Janexcon Engineering, was attacked at her office in Montrose, Chaguanas, on January 20. The former Miss Point Fortin 2006 was found badly injured in the corridor of the office by maintenance staff. Though the initial motive for the assault was believed to be robbery, investigators said they were exploring a number of theories which might have triggered the attack. It is believed that around 5.20 pm on the day of the incident, Worrell went back to her office to get her cellular phone when she was attacked.
The assailant smashed her jaw, broke her cheekbones and struck her on the back of the head, leaving her in a coma with a swollen brain. Up to late yesterday, the suspect remained detained at the Couva Police Station where he was interrogated by investigators. A month after the attack, police recovered Worrell's cellphone which was stolen by her attacker. Despite recovering the stolen phone, investigators were unable to make a breakthrough in the case as the suspect was said to be hiding from authorities. The suspect is co-operating with investigators and criminal charges will be laid within the next couple of days, senior police sources said. Worrell's condition has not improved since the attack with her limbs beginning to curl, relatives said in an interview with the T&T Guardian last week. Worrell is said to be able to recognise some members of her family but is unable to communicate except with screams, groans and feeble hand grasps.
