ST GEORGE'S, Grenada-A four-star resort is closing in the eastern Caribbean nation of Grenada, adding to the island's tourism woes. La Source says it will close Monday due to unforeseen circumstances. It doesn't elaborate. The 100-room resort was heavily damaged by Hurricane Ivan in 2004 and didn't reopen until February 2008.
More than 150 workers will be laid off as a result of the closure. The announcement comes just months after Delta Air Lines and American Eagle cancelled service to Grenada. Meanwhile, American Airlines, British Airways and regional carrier LIAT have announced flight reductions to the island. An estimated 55,900 tourists visited Grenada in the first six months of this year. That was a five per cent drop from the same period in 2011, the Caribbean Tourism Organization says.
