"Looking is free. Come nah, darling," she said. A few minutes later I'd purchased a handmade straw clutch.
The vendors at the Nassau Straw Market know how to coax. Located on Bay Street, Nassau, the market is home to hundreds of vendors; some of whom have been crafting straw goods since the 1940s after the local sponge market declined.
At the market, straw baskets, hats, mats and a variety of wooden carvings and handmade jewelry are on sale.
While the vendors are primarily women, the men are equally industrious and some play a supporting role to their female relatives by setting up stalls and manning the fort.
