A trop­i­cal storm watch is in ef­fect for Ja­maica and Haiti, af­ter a trop­i­cal de­pres­sion in the Caribbean Sea formed in­to TS Sandy this af­ter­noon.

Sandy could be near hur­ri­cane strength when it ap­proach­es Ja­maica, the US-based Na­tion­al Hur­ri­cane Cen­ter (NHC) said in an ad­vi­so­ry is­sued at 5 pm.

"Trop­i­cal storm con­di­tions are pos­si­ble in Ja­maica by Tues­day night...and...in Haiti by ear­ly Wednes­day", the re­lease stat­ed.

The NHC is re­port­ing no coastal watch­es or warn­ings for Trop­i­cal De­pres­sion Nine­teen, which al­so formed in the At­lantic Ocean to­day.
