A tropical storm watch is in effect for Jamaica and Haiti, after a tropical depression in the Caribbean Sea formed into TS Sandy this afternoon.
Sandy could be near hurricane strength when it approaches Jamaica, the US-based National Hurricane Center (NHC) said in an advisory issued at 5 pm.
"Tropical storm conditions are possible in Jamaica by Tuesday night...and...in Haiti by early Wednesday", the release stated.
The NHC is reporting no coastal watches or warnings for Tropical Depression Nineteen, which also formed in the Atlantic Ocean today.
