Entwined is a retelling of the classic tale of The Twelve Dancing Princesses that really does have a majestic, fairytale feel to it which makes it stand out from many other young adult novels.
Princess Azalea and her 11 sisters are in mourning after the loss of their mother, who died after giving birth to the twelfth princess, Lily.
Locked up inside their home in mourning and pushed away by their father at a time when they need each other the most, the girls are miserable... until they discover a magic passageway that leads to a land of silver and beauty that allows them to indulge in their deepest passion for hours at a time: dancing.
The Keeper, the man who is trapped there, extends an invitation to the girls, allowing them to come back every night and dance their troubles away. Such an offer comes at a price and Azalea must find a way to put an end to the Keeper before he hurts her loved ones.
The story is told from the oldest princess Azalea's perspective, who is forced into early maturity as she must now take care of her 11 sisters by herself.
She doesn't have much of a say in who she is to wed or really anything in the household, but we see her growing bolder as the story progresses, embodying strength that all her sisters adapt as well.
The most beautiful part of the book is that character development allows the reader to get to know each of the 12 princesses. Each has a different personality and individual struggle, regardless of their age.
The vivid descriptions create an alternate world that lures the reader deeper and deeper in to the point where accepting the fact that it's not a real place is a bit painful.
Entwined is a fresh and bright twist to an old story, making it the perfect read for any teen girl. It's a delicate mix of adventure, comedy, suspense and romance; be sure to check it out!
