En­twined is a retelling of the clas­sic tale of The Twelve Danc­ing Princess­es that re­al­ly does have a ma­jes­tic, fairy­tale feel to it which makes it stand out from many oth­er young adult nov­els.

Princess Aza­lea and her 11 sis­ters are in mourn­ing af­ter the loss of their moth­er, who died af­ter giv­ing birth to the twelfth princess, Lily.

Locked up in­side their home in mourn­ing and pushed away by their fa­ther at a time when they need each oth­er the most, the girls are mis­er­able... un­til they dis­cov­er a mag­ic pas­sage­way that leads to a land of sil­ver and beau­ty that al­lows them to in­dulge in their deep­est pas­sion for hours at a time: danc­ing.

The Keep­er, the man who is trapped there, ex­tends an in­vi­ta­tion to the girls, al­low­ing them to come back every night and dance their trou­bles away. Such an of­fer comes at a price and Aza­lea must find a way to put an end to the Keep­er be­fore he hurts her loved ones.

The sto­ry is told from the old­est princess Aza­lea's per­spec­tive, who is forced in­to ear­ly ma­tu­ri­ty as she must now take care of her 11 sis­ters by her­self.

She doesn't have much of a say in who she is to wed or re­al­ly any­thing in the house­hold, but we see her grow­ing bold­er as the sto­ry pro­gress­es, em­body­ing strength that all her sis­ters adapt as well.

The most beau­ti­ful part of the book is that char­ac­ter de­vel­op­ment al­lows the read­er to get to know each of the 12 princess­es. Each has a dif­fer­ent per­son­al­i­ty and in­di­vid­ual strug­gle, re­gard­less of their age.

The vivid de­scrip­tions cre­ate an al­ter­nate world that lures the read­er deep­er and deep­er in to the point where ac­cept­ing the fact that it's not a re­al place is a bit painful.
