Don't worry about looking 'On The Dark Side' for the £27,000 11-runner Ripon Champion Two Yrs Old Trophy today! Drawn best of all, right by the stands rail(s), Kevin Ryan's charge comes out best and is definitely worth another chance, according to my time-handicap which 'specialises' with juveniles. We napped On The Dark Side at Newbury last time out but a tardy start and the fact this Kheleyf filly could never get into a challenging position, meant Philip Makin gave up the cause a long way out; beaten only five lengths and 10lbs below previous effort was an interesting, if disappointing, effort but much better is expected this afternoon.
This is an absolute belter, deserving of 'listed' status and all runners are previous winners. This time, Makin will be hell bent on getting her out like a rocket and holding prime position. It should be fascinating and at huge odds, it might just pay to stick with the 'Dark' horse! Earlier, Hayley Turner rides top-rated, Gunner Will in the Maiden Stakes, over seven furlongs at Epsom which brings into play balance and judgement. There's no one better than 'daily earner' and following two promising runs, Gunner Will represents a tremendous betting proposition and must not be missed.
Bank Holiday Monday is always frenetic and overwhelming but by streamlining the process and sticking to set-weight races, reduces the work load. Another 'cert' is Roedean in the Maiden Fillies' Stakes over a mile at Chepstow. Over the years, I've noticed Richard Hannon often raids this Welsh venue during bank holiday meetings and Roedean, named after a famous college for girls, should prove an attraction.
Looking forward to what promises to be an intriguing and rewarding day.
